The north of Portugal has a problem with too much beauty. Between the Atlantic coast of Minho, the mountains of Peneda-Gerês National Park, the valleys of Lima and Cávado and the Galician border of the Rio Minho, there are enough river beaches to occupy an entire summer — and most of them remain completely unknown to foreign visitors and even many Portuguese. This is our guide to the hidden and prettiest river beaches in the north.
Ermida River Beach — Wild Gerês
The Ermida River Beach is among the most beautiful of Peneda-Gerês National Park — and least known. To get there, you need to walk several kilometres along the Rio Homem Trail, which naturally ensures that only those determined enough reach it. The reward is a beach with translucent water nestled in a granite valley of wild beauty, surrounded by oaks and alders, with the constant sound of the river as soundtrack. There are no beach facilities or bar — bring everything you need. That's exactly its charm.
How to get there: on foot, along Rio Homem Trail from Campo do Gerês (~12 km round trip)
What to bring: water, food, water shoes, sunscreen
Best month: July and August for heat; June and September for total solitude
Lindoso River Beach — national park without crowds
The Lindoso River Beach, in the Alto Lindoso reservoir at the heart of Gerês, is surprisingly little visited for the beauty it offers. The mountains of the national park reflect on the calm blue waters of the reservoir, the medieval village of Lindoso with its granaries sits right above, and there are rarely many people. The water is fresh and clean, and the surrounding landscape is first-class. It's Gerês' best-kept secret.
Extra tip: visit Lindoso's granaries early in the morning before heading down to the beach — they're one of Portugal's most photogenic sets of vernacular architecture
Fauna: it's one of few places in Portugal where there is a real chance to spot wolves and garanos (wild horses) at dawn
Melgaço River Beach — Alvarinho and Minho border
In the extreme north of Portugal, Melgaço is the country's most northern municipality, backed by Rio Minho which serves as natural border with Galicia. It's also heart of sub-region of Alvarinho, noblest white grape variety of Vinho Verde, whose vines grow on granite slopes above Minho. The Melgaço River Beach is on banks of Rio Minho, with Galicia visible from other side of bank — unique location in Portugal. Beach has supporting facilities and tranquil atmosphere that contrasts with more touristy character of beaches along Minho coast. Combine visit with tasting Alvarinho at local cellars.
Historical note: Melgaço has one of best preserved medieval castles of Alto Minho, with stunning views over valley of Minho and Galicia
Best time: June to September; Alvarinho is harvested in September — ideal time for combining beach and harvest
Ribeira de Pena River Beach — reservoir in forest
The Ribeira de Pena River Beach is quietest destination of this selection. Situated on banks of a reservoir nestled into landscape of forest and mountain south of Chaves, this beach has almost intimate character — silence is rare in other places, and still water of reservoir warms more than that of mountain rivers, making it especially inviting. Municipality of Ribeira de Pena is practically unknown in tourist circuit, which ensures beach remains tranquil retreat even in August.
Atmosphere: pine and oak woods around, perfect for picnics
Ideal for: families seeking peace, travellers wanting to escape crowds completely
