The Lima River is born in Galicia and enters Portugal through the northern border, crossing a landscape of green hills, vineyards estates and granite villages that make up the heart of Minho. Along its course, before emptying into the Atlantic at Viana do Castelo, the Lima creates conditions for some of the country's most beautiful river beaches. This route follows the valley of the Lima from downstream to upstream, from Ponte de Lima to the Alto Lindoso reservoir in Gerês — a journey that combines history, gastronomy, landscape and river bathing.
Stop 1: Ponte de Lima — Portugal's oldest town
The route starts at Ponte de Lima, considered the oldest town of Portugal and one of the most photogenic destinations in Alto Minho. Its Roman-medieval multi-arched bridge, riverside gardens, blazoned houses and animation from the famous bi-weekly market (the country's oldest, on alternating Mondays) make up a scene of rare harmony. The Ponte de Lima River Beach is right next to the historic bridge, with the calm and shallow Rio Lima creating excellent conditions for families with children. The beach has complete infrastructure and the view of the bridge is one of the town's postcards.
Don't miss: Museu dos Terceiros (Third Order Museum), medieval town halls and regional products shop at Convento de Santo António
Accommodation: Ponte de Lima has a wide range of accommodation, from boutique hotels to historical mansions (blazoned houses in housing tourism regime)
Stop 2: Arcos de Valdevez — where the Vez River meets the Lima
Following EN202 upstream through the Vale do Lima valley, you reach Arcos de Valdevez, a charming town nestled in the valley where the Vez River tributary joins the Lima. The Arcos de Valdevez River Beach is located on the banks of the Vez, with a fresher and wilder atmosphere than Ponte de Lima. The water is colder — it comes directly from the mountains in the national park — and the scenery is very beautiful. The town has a well-preserved medieval urban complex, with its square, Arcos mansion and gardens by the river.
Local gastronomy: Barrosã cow (regional meat of exceptional quality), lamprey in winter, and Vinho Verde wines from the sub-region of Arcos de Valdevez
Distance from Ponte de Lima: ~20 km (20 minutes by car)
Stop 3: Lindoso — the lake at the heart of the park
The last stop on this route takes us to the edge of Peneda-Gerês National Park: the village of Lindoso, with its medieval castle and granite granaries — structures for drying corn that are a unique architectural symbol of Minho culture. The Lindoso River Beach is on the banks of Alto Lindoso reservoir, with stunning views over the park's mountains. The water is crystal clear and fresh and the surroundings, with the park's mountains reflected in the lake mirror, are a beauty that you won't forget.
Tip: arrive early — parking at Lindoso is limited in July and August
Distance from Arcos: ~20 km (25 minutes by car via EN202 and EM504)
Vinho Verde of the Vale do Lima
This entire route crosses the Vinho Verde region, and the valley of the Lima produces some of the most elegant examples of this denomination. Look for Loureiro varieties (the white grape queen of the Lima) at riverside estates — it's the perfect wine to accompany a fish lunch in Ponte de Lima or Arcos before continuing on your route.
