The interior of Beiras has its own unique beach identity, different from the Atlantic beaches and even those on the Rio Alva's granite shores. Here, rivers are gentler, landscapes more open, and the atmosphere is that of a rural Portugal still preserving the slow cadence of summer in the countryside. Vineyards of Dão, villages built with schist and granite, and the robust cuisine of Beira Alta compose the setting where these region's river beaches fit.
River Beach of Nelas
The River Beach of Nelas is located on the banks of Rio Dão, in the heart of one of Portugal's most important wine regions. The Dão river is calm here, with gentle currents and a tree-lined bank that provides natural shade — a precious rarity on hot Beirão summer days. The beach has adequate support infrastructure and a tranquil environment that makes it especially appreciated by families with young children. Around, the landscape consists of vineyards and pine forest, and there are no lack of wineries to visit and taste the famous Dão wines, considered among Portugal's most elegant.
Better for: families, quiet stays, combination with wine tourism
Recommended period: June to September
Tip: visit one of the region's wineries before or after the beach — Dão produces full-bodied reds and fresh whites of exceptional quality
River Beach of Aguieira Dam
The Aguieira Dam, on the Mondego river near Mortágua and Santa Comba Dão, is one of Portugal's Center region's largest reservoirs. Its vast, blue, relatively calm water surface creates ideal conditions for a wide variety of nautical activities: kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding, sailing and waterskiing have here a privileged stage. The Aguieira river beach benefits from an extensive sandy area and views over the dam's mirror lake, framed by pine and eucalyptus forest. The environment is more open and luminous than those of the Rio Alva valley-enclosed beaches, which gives it a different character — more spacious, better suited to groups and spending a whole afternoon by the water.
The reservoir also has a park for picnics with support infrastructure, making it an excellent option for family outings. On summer weekends, it is common to find here nautical sports schools and organized canoeing groups.
Better for: families, groups, lovers of water sports
Access: from Mortágua via N234, following signs for Aguieira Dam
Recommended period: May to September — the reservoir maintains a stable water level that favors aquatic sports
The surrounding region: what else to do
A visit to these river beaches easily combines with other attractions of the region. Portugal's Center — as this tourist region is known — has a diversified offer: the city of Viseu, less than 30 km from Nelas, has a notable historic center with Sé Catedral and Museu Nacional Grão Vasco; the Schist Villages, spread across Serra do Açor and Lousã, offer high-quality pedestrian routes; and Serra da Estrela, Portugal's mainland largest mountain range, is one hour by car.
- The region's gastronomy includes Bairrada suckling pig (less than 40 km away), Beira Alta kid goat and Serra da Estrela cheeses
- Dão wine is a recognized DOC — look for Touriga Nacional and Encruzado varieties
- Rural tourism accommodation in the Nelas and Mortágua region is abundant and of growing quality
