Portugal has a rich tradition of coastal camping that dates back to the 1970s and remains vibrant and diverse. With over 800 kilometres of mainland coastline, there are campsites in almost every coastal region — from large urban sites with pools and supermarkets to more rustic, remote spots inside protected natural parks.
Best coastal campsites by region
In the Algarve, Camping Sagres inside the Southwest Alentejo Natural Park sits minutes from Praia do Martinhal, while Orbitur Valverde near Lagos is one of the largest and best-equipped sites in the south. In the Alentejo, the Zambujeira do Mar campsite gives direct access to one of Portugal's most beautiful beaches. On the Silver Coast, Orbitur Gala in Figueira da Foz is metres from the beach. On the Vicentine Coast, Carrapateira campsite puts you 5 minutes from the spectacular Praia do Bordeira.
Glamping by the sea
Glamping — luxury camping with permanent tents, wooden bungalows or geodesic domes — is growing rapidly in Portugal. Operators like Zmar in the Alentejo and The Wild Camp on the Vicentine Coast offer proximity to nature and the sea without sacrificing comfort, at prices comparable to a 3-star hotel.
Booking tips
- In July and August, the most popular campsites book out months in advance — reserve early, especially for fixed tents or bungalows
- Campsites inside natural parks have specific rules (no fires, curfews, etc.) — check before you go
- The European Camping Card (CCI) gives discounts at many Portuguese sites
