For dog owners, summer raises a recurring question: where can I go to the beach with my pet? In Portugal, the law is clear: during the bathing season (generally June to September), dogs are prohibited on the vast majority of supervised beaches. But there are exceptions — and there are more of them every year.
Where dogs are welcome
Municipalities have the autonomy to create designated "dog zones" on certain beaches during the bathing season. In the Algarve, Lagos maintains a section of Praia do Canavial open to dogs year-round. In the Lisbon area, Costa da Caparica has dog-friendly sections at the northern and southern ends of the beach. River beaches across Portugal are generally far more permissive with pets than sea beaches — rivers like the Zêzere, Lima and Minho have multiple river beaches where dogs swim freely.
Rules to follow
- Lead required in access areas — only release your dog inside the designated dog zone
- Poop bags are mandatory by law; fines for non-compliance can reach €750
- Fresh water for your dog — hot sand and summer sun cause rapid dehydration in animals
- After swimming in the sea, rinse your dog with fresh water to remove salt, which can irritate the skin
