Naturism in Portugal has a well-established tradition and a clear legal framework. The Portuguese Naturism Federation (FPN) maintains an updated list of beaches officially recognised by local authorities for naturist use. These beaches are distinguished from mixed-use beaches — where nudism is informally tolerated in some less supervised areas — by having specific signage, defined rules and, in many cases, toilet and support facilities.
Best naturist beaches
Praia de Meco (Sesimbra) is the most well-known naturist beach in Portugal, with a clearly delimited nudist zone in the south, independent access and one of the few naturist beaches with a beach bar and facilities — convenient for its proximity to Lisbon. In the Alentejo, Praia de Aberta Nova inside the Southwest Alentejo Natural Park is wild and infrastructure-free but extraordinarily beautiful. In the Algarve, Praia do Barriga near Vila do Bispo has been a naturist beach for decades — remote, accessible by a dirt track, with Atlantic waves and stunning cliffs.
Naturist beach etiquette
- Towel always underneath when sitting in public areas
- Photography strictly prohibited without explicit consent of everyone in the image — penalties are severe
- Respectful behaviour — naturism is not exhibitionism; inappropriate behaviour is strongly rejected by the naturist community
- High-factor sunscreen — on naturist beaches you expose areas of the body rarely exposed to sun; use SPF 50 on your first visits
