Snorkelling and Diving in Portugal: The Best Beaches for Underwater Exploration

Portugal has some of the most marine-biodiverse waters in Europe. From the Algarve to the Azores, via the Sesimbra Marine Park, the opportunities for snorkelling and diving are extraordinary for all levels.

Portugal is an underrated diving destination. Most visitors come for the sun and sand, but those who venture below the surface discover a world of remarkable marine biodiversity: octopuses changing colour among the rocks, sea bream shoaling in Algarve caves, seahorses in the Ria Formosa saltmarshes, and — in the Azores — dolphins, manta rays and whale sharks.

Top snorkelling spots

In the Algarve, Praia da Marinha and Benagil offer caves and arches full of marine life, ideal for snorkelling from the beach. Near Lisbon, the Arrábida Marine Park (Sesimbra) offers exceptional Atlantic visibility of up to 20–25 metres, with moray eels, bass, grouper and octopuses. The Berlengas Nature Reserve off Peniche is an Atlantic jewel with walls, tunnels and rich biodiversity — reachable by ferry from June to September.

Diving highlights

For experienced divers, the Azores are a world-class destination: close to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, with currents that attract hammerhead sharks, manta rays and cetaceans. In Madeira, the Garajau Marine Reserve near Funchal is one of Europe's most reliable spots for sea turtle encounters in the wild.

For beginners

The Algarve is the best starting point for first-timers — warmer water, less swell, more operators. Try-dive experiences (no certification needed) are available in Lagos, Portimão and Albufeira from around €50–80 per person.
