Benagil Beach
Lagoa, Faro
About this beach
Praia de Benagil, situated in the small village of Benagil in the municipality of Lagoa, is world-famous for the Benagil Cave — one of the most photographed and visited sea caves on the planet. Approximately 130 metres in length, the beach is the launching point for one of Portugal's most extraordinary natural spectacles. Coordinates: 37°05'08"N, 8°25'16"W.
Location
Benagil belongs to the municipality of Lagoa, in central Algarve (Faro district). The beach sits tucked between impressive limestone cliffs, about 3 km east of Carvoeiro and 2 km west of Praia da Marinha. The small fishing village of Benagil lends its name to both the beach and the cave that made it internationally famous.
Getting there
By car, take the CM1154 road from the EN125 between Lagoa and Carvoeiro. Free parking is available approximately 200 metres from the beach at the top of the cliff. Note: parking fills up quickly in summer — arrive before 9am. Access to the beach is via a concrete ramp with a moderate slope.
What to expect
The beach has a compact but very appealing sandy area with fine golden sand. The surrounding cliffs give it the feel of a sheltered cove. During the bathing season (June–September) a lifeguard is on duty. There is no fixed beach bar, but the village of Benagil has fresh fish restaurants. No equipment concessions — bring your own beach gear.
Activities and experiences
Access to the Benagil Cave — the Algar de Benagil — is only possible by sea: swimming (for experienced swimmers in good physical condition), kayak, stand-up paddleboard (SUP), or organised boat tour. Tours depart from Carvoeiro, Portimão and Armação de Pêra. The cave has two sea entrances, a hole in the ceiling that dramatically illuminates the interior with natural light, and a small interior beach. Visit at low tide and in calm sea conditions. Snorkelling in the waters outside the cave is also excellent.
Best time to visit
May to October for visiting the cave and beach. July and August are the busiest months — the beach fills up quickly. For a quieter experience, visit in May, June or September, ideally early in the morning. Water temperature ranges from 18°C in June to 22°C in August.
Nearby beaches
Praia da Marinha, 1.5 km to the west, is considered one of Europe's most beautiful beaches. Praia do Carvoeiro is about 3 km away. Praia de Centianes and Praia de Caneiros are further options within a few kilometres.
