About this beach

Praia da Falésia is one of the longest and most visually striking beaches in the Algarve, stretching approximately 6 kilometres of uninterrupted sand between Vilamoura (to the east) and Olhos de Água (to the west), in the municipality of Albufeira. Its imposing sandstone cliffs in shades of ochre, red and white — reaching up to 30 metres in height — define one of the most iconic coastal landscapes in Portugal. Blue Flag awarded by FEE. Coordinates: 37°04'30"N, 8°11'30"W.

Location

The beach is located in the parish of Albufeira e Olhos de Água, municipality of Albufeira, Faro district, in the Algarve region. The main access point (via wooden stairs) is at Olhos de Água, with the beach extending east towards Vilamoura marina.

Getting there

By car, the main access is via the road from Olhos de Água (Albufeira). There is a paid car park at the top of the wooden stairs. Vilamoura marina also provides access to the eastern end. By public transport, Olhos de Água is served by buses from Albufeira. There is a lift (elevator) at the central section for improved accessibility.

What to expect

A wide expanse of fine golden sand, sheltered by imposing cliffs that provide natural shade during the hottest hours. In the bathing season (June–September): sunbed and parasol hire, beach bar, lifeguards, toilets. Blue Flag and Qualipraia awards for water quality and facilities. Water quality is regularly monitored by APA (Agência Portuguesa do Ambiente).

Activities and experiences

The beach length invites long seaside walks against a backdrop of colourful cliffs. Water activities include surfing, bodyboarding, paddleboarding and canoeing. The cliff fauna and rock pools are rich in marine life. The atmosphere varies: livelier near bars and concessions close to Olhos de Água, quieter and wilder towards the eastern end.

Best time to visit

June to September is the ideal bathing season. Water temperatures range from 18°C in June to 23°C in August. South-facing orientation guarantees good sun exposure all day. May and October offer vibrant cliff colours with far fewer visitors.

Nearby beaches

Praia de Olhos de Água is a few minutes west. Praia de Santa Eulália is about 4 km west in Albufeira. Vilamoura beach occupies the eastern end.
