Piscinas Naturais de Porto Moniz
Porto Moniz, Madeira
About this beach
The Piscinas Naturais de Porto Moniz are one of Madeira's most iconic sights and one of the most singular bathing attractions in Portugal. Formed by lava that solidified along the island's northwest coast over centuries, these volcanic pools create a system of natural lagoons sheltered from the open ocean, with crystal-clear water and comfortable temperatures. Managed by the Porto Moniz municipality, they feature entry facilities, changing rooms, restaurants and a clearly demarcated swimming area. Swimming among black lava formations while the Atlantic crashes against the surrounding rocks is an experience found nowhere else in the archipelago.
