About this beach

Praia de Odeceixe is one of the best-kept secrets on the Alentejo-Algarve coast, located at the boundary between the two regions in Aljezur municipality, within the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park. Its defining feature is unique in Portugal: the Ribeira de Seixe river meets the Atlantic here, creating a calm freshwater lagoon sheltered by dunes alongside open ocean waves. Families wade in the warm, shallow river side while surfers ride the Atlantic just metres away.

Location

The beach is about 3 km from Odeceixe village, at the northern tip of the Algarve/southern Alentejo, Aljezur municipality, Faro district. It sits within Europe's largest protected coastal area. GPS: approximately 37°26'N, 8°47'W.

Getting There

By car from Odeceixe village (on the N120 road), follow the winding road 3 km to the coast. Small paid car park at the end; walk to beach via boardwalk. In July and August parking fills early — arrive before 10am or use the seasonal bus. No direct year-round public transport.

What to Expect

Beach bar, restaurant, basic facilities and showers. Regular Blue Flag. The river divides the beach into two zones: calm warm lagoon (ideal for children) and open Atlantic surf (for experienced swimmers and surfers). Low schist cliffs frame the scene beautifully.

Activities

Surfing and bodyboarding on consistent Atlantic swell. Family swimming in the river lagoon. Exceptional birdwatching at the estuary — storks, herons and waders are common. Cliff walks north to Monte Clérigo or south to Aljezur through protected landscape.

Best Time to Visit

June to September is beach season; August is busiest. May and September are ideal for quieter conditions with warm enough water (18-20°C). Winter brings surfers and nature lovers seeking wild Atlantic scenery.

Praia do Monte Clérigo is 6 km south. Praia da Amoreira (also an estuary beach) is 8 km. Further north, Praia da Zambujeira do Mar begins the Alentejo coast.
