Nazaré Beach
Nazaré, Leiria
About this beach
Praia da Nazaré is one of Portugal's most iconic and famous beach destinations, world-renowned for the giant waves generated by the Nazaré Underwater Canyon — one of the largest geological formations of its kind in the world. In these waters, some of the world's greatest surfers risk their lives chasing world records: Garrett McNamara surfed the world's highest wave here in 2011, making Nazaré a legendary place in surf history. But Praia da Nazaré is much more than extreme surf: it is a fishing village with a very strong cultural identity, where you can still see traditional Nazarene women in typical costumes and fishermen drying fish in the sun. Gastronomy is one of the greatest attractions — fresh daily fish and seafood are served in typical restaurants by the sea. The Fort of São Miguel Arcanjo, in Sítio da Nazaré, offers stunning panoramic views over the ocean and waves. The beach holds a Blue Flag and complete facilities. Nazaré annually hosts the MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal, a World Surf League event that draws athletes and spectators from around the world every autumn.
