Carcavelos Beach
Cascais, Lisbon
About this beach
Praia de Carcavelos is the largest and most popular urban beach in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, located on the Cascais Line in the municipality of Cascais, just 20 minutes from Lisbon by train. With approximately 1 km of fine golden sand, it is Lisbon residents' favourite beach destination on hot days, welcoming millions of visitors annually. Its regular and powerful waves have made Carcavelos one of Portugal's premier surf and bodyboard beaches, with recognised surf schools and regular championships attracting practitioners from around the world. The beach holds the coveted Blue Flag and offers all facilities: beach bar, restaurants, surf equipment rental, parking area, and excellent public transport access directly via the Cascais railway line. The Fort of São Julião da Barra, one of the world's largest maritime fortresses, rises majestically beside the beach, providing a unique historical backdrop. Water temperature, influenced by the Atlantic current, averages 18-20°C in summer. Carcavelos is also popular for beach football, beach volleyball, and nautical sports enthusiasts. Its proximity to central Lisbon and excellent train connection make it the perfect option for a car-free beach day.
