Costa Nova do Prado Beach
Ílhavo, Aveiro
About this beach
Praia de Costa Nova do Prado is one of the most iconic beaches on the Silver Coast of Portugal, located on a narrow sandbar between the Atlantic Ocean and the Ria de Aveiro lagoon, in the municipality of Ílhavo. Awarded the Blue Flag since 1987 and certified as an "Accessible Beach, Beach for All" since 2002, this extensive golden sand beach stretches for several kilometres of clean, well-maintained shoreline protected by dune cordons and wooden boardwalks. What truly sets Costa Nova apart is its unique landscape: the seafront opens onto the ocean with waves favoured by surfers and bodyboarders, while on the other side of the road stand the famous palheiros — wooden houses painted with colourful stripes that have become one of Portugal's most photographed landmarks. The dual waterfront setting gives this place a singular character: rough sea on the western side and the calm waters of the Ria de Aveiro on the eastern side, ideal for sailing, canoeing and stand-up paddle. The beach has lifeguard supervision during the bathing season (15 June to 15 September), showers, restrooms, a beach bar and restaurants nearby. Parking is ample and access for people with reduced mobility is assured. Located about 11 km from the centre of Aveiro, Costa Nova is easily accessible by car or bus.
