About this beach

Costa Nova do Prado Beach is one of the most iconic maritime beaches on Portugal's Silver Coast, set on a narrow sandbar between the Atlantic Ocean and the Ria de Aveiro lagoon, in the municipality of Ílhavo. Holder of the Blue Flag since 1987 and certified as an Accessible Beach since 2002, this extensive golden-sand beach stretches for several kilometres of clean, well-kept shoreline protected by a dune system and wooden boardwalks. What truly sets Costa Nova apart is its unique landscape: the sea-facing side is open to the Atlantic with waves appreciated by surfers and bodyboarders, while just across the main road stand the famous palheiros — colourfully striped wooden houses that have become one of Portugal's most photographed landmarks. The dual waterfront gives this place a singular atmosphere: Atlantic waves to the west and the calm waters of the Ria de Aveiro to the east, ideal for sailing, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding. The beach has lifeguard surveillance during the bathing season (15 June to 15 September), showers, toilet facilities, a beach bar, and restaurants nearby. Parking is ample and access for people with reduced mobility is provided. Located approximately 11 km from the centre of Aveiro, Costa Nova is easily reached by car or by bus (BUSWay Região de Aveiro service).
