Praia de Santa Bárbara
Ribeira Grande, Azores
About this beach
Praia de Santa Bárbara is the longest and most iconic beach on São Miguel island in the Azores. Located in the municipality of Ribeira Grande on the island's rugged north coast, it stretches for approximately 700 metres of dark volcanic sand lapped by the cold, powerful waters of the North Atlantic. Internationally renowned as one of the Azores' premier surf destinations, the beach has hosted European surfing competitions and draws wave riders from around the world. The backdrop of steep green mountains plunging into the ocean creates a scene of raw, authentic beauty. The beach holds Blue Flag certification and provides full bathing support services during the summer season.
