About this beach

Praia Fluvial da Póvoa e Meadas sits on the Póvoa e Meadas reservoir in the municipality of Castelo de Vide, Portalegre district, in inland Alentejo. It's a fine-sand river beach roughly 350 metres long, formed by the dammed waters of the Vale da Roda stream, a tributary of the Ribeira de Nisa basin. Water quality was rated Excellent for the 2025 bathing season.

The beach lies about 5 km northwest of the historic town of Castelo de Vide, known for its medieval castle and former Jewish quarter, and is reached via national roads EN18 and EN359 and municipal road EM1007. The reservoir, one of the largest in Alto Alentejo, is ringed by cork oak and olive groves and granite rock outcrops that give the setting a distinctive character. The dam that created it, built in 1927-1928, was one of Portugal's earliest major hydroelectric works.

During the bathing season, from 1 June to 30 September, the beach has a lifeguard on duty, a car park, and riverside restaurants and a beach bar, plus showers. There are no public toilets and no wheelchair-accessible paths. Thanks to the calm, dammed water and the short drive into Castelo de Vide, it's a popular choice for families combining a beach day with a visit to the town.
