Prainha, on the Ponta de São Lourenço near Caniçal, is the only naturally black-sand beach on the island of Madeira, formed from volcanic sediment. Sheltered in a small cove of calm, warm water, it is a much-loved spot for families, reached by a staircase and framed by a dramatic, arid landscape.
