About this beach
Praia de São Roque do Pico is on the northern coast of Pico island in the Azores, one of the most dramatic islands in the archipelago due to the imposing presence of the Pico volcano — at 2,351 metres, the highest point in Portugal. The beach has intensely black basaltic sand, pebbles and lava rocks that define the raw Atlantic character of this coast. The setting is unique: from the shoreline, the volcano rises directly from the ocean, creating one of the most dramatic panoramas in the entire Azores archipelago. Pico island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its cultural landscape of vineyards.
