Silver Coast

Silver Coast

Portugal's Silver Coast stretches approximately 200 kilometres from Espinho in the north to São Martinho do Porto in the south, covering the districts of Aveiro, Coimbra, and Leiria, in a region historically known as Estremadura and Beira Litoral. The name evokes the silver sheen of Atlantic-washed sands, the diffuse glow of autumn afternoons, and the spray of waves rolling in from the open ocean. Beaches here are long, open, white or slightly golden, and the vigorous surf makes this a premier destination for surfers. Nazaré stands at the heart of the region: its legendary canyon waves are the world's greatest big-wave surfing spectacle. Beyond Nazaré, Figueira da Foz and Aveiro are unmissable, while the Ria de Aveiro — Portugal's Venice — offers a unique experience of calm, picturesque lagoon beaches. The Silver Coast draws elite surfers and bodyboarders, but also families and cultural travellers exploring the monasteries of Alcobaça and Batalha, or Coimbra's medieval university. June to September is peak season, but surf conditions are exceptional year-round.
