Beiras Interior: Guide to the River Beaches of Nelas, Viseu and Aguieira Reservoir

Between the vineyards of the Dão wine region and the gentle hills of Beira Alta, the interior of Viseu hides river beaches and reservoir shores perfect for families. Nelas and the vast Aguieira reservoir are destinations well worth the detour.

The interior of the Beiras region offers a gentler, more pastoral kind of river bathing. Here the rivers run calmer, the landscapes are more open, and the backdrop is one of vineyards, schist villages and the unhurried rhythm of a Portuguese summer in the countryside.

Nelas river beach

Nelas sits on the Rio Dão in the heart of one of Portugal's finest wine regions. The river is calm and slow at this point, with tree-lined banks that provide natural shade — invaluable in the hot Beira summer. The beach is well-equipped and family-oriented, making it ideal for a relaxed day out. The surrounding landscape of vineyards and pine forest invites a stop at one of the local wineries to taste the elegant Dão reds and whites before or after the beach.

Barragem da Aguieira reservoir

The Aguieira reservoir on the Mondego river near Mortágua is one of central Portugal's largest bodies of water. Its vast, calm surface is ideal for water sports — kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding and sailing are all popular here. The beach itself has a wide sandy shore and open views over the reservoir, surrounded by pine and eucalyptus forest. More spacious and open than the enclosed valley beaches of the Rio Alva, Aguieira suits groups and families looking for a full day by the water with room to spread out.

Practical tips

Both locations are best visited June to September. Combine with a visit to Viseu city (30 km from Nelas), with its remarkable cathedral and Grão Vasco National Museum. The Dão wine region offers excellent winery visits year-round. Rural accommodation in the area has grown substantially and is of consistently good quality.
