Afro Nation Portugal — Praia da Rocha, Portimão
The festival that made the Algarve a global destination
Afro Nation Portugal is undoubtedly the most iconic beach festival in the country. It takes place annually at Praia da Rocha in Portimão, one of the longest and most accessible beaches in the Algarve, with 1.5 km of orange sand backed by stunning cliffs. In 2026 the festival returns on 3, 4 and 5 July, with a lineup centred on afrobeats, hip-hop, dancehall and R&B from African and diaspora artists.
The main stage is set directly on the sand, with the Atlantic as backdrop. It's a visual spectacle without parallel in the European festival scene. Capacity is around 30,000 per day and tickets typically sell out in pre-sale.

MOGA Portugal — Costa da Caparica
Electronic music with your feet in the sand
MOGA Portugal is the country's leading underground electronic music festival, and Costa da Caparica provides the perfect stage: 30 km of Atlantic beach 20 minutes from Lisbon. In 2026 it runs from 17 to 19 July, with a lineup focused on techno, house and experimental electronica, featuring international DJs and sets that carry on until dawn beside the ocean.
What makes MOGA unique is its coherence: it's not a mass-market festival — capacity is limited (~8,000 people) with very careful curation. The stages are literally on the beach, with sound competing only with the waves.

Sol da Caparica — Costa da Caparica
Portugal's most popular summer festival
Sol da Caparica is the most democratic festival on this list: affordable tickets, eclectic lineup (pop, hip-hop, electronica, reggaeton) and a relaxed atmosphere that mainly attracts young Portuguese audiences. It runs from 13 to 16 August 2026 at Costa da Caparica, with stages on the sand and a genuinely beachy festival vibe.
It's the ideal event for combining a festival with a beach holiday: spend the day in the ocean, and from evening there's music until 4 AM. The logistics are simple because the whole area has solid tourist infrastructure.

NOS Alive — Algés, Lisbon
Portugal's biggest festival with a beach 5 minutes away
NOS Alive is not technically a beach festival — it takes place at the Passeio Marítimo de Algés — but Algés Beach and the Cascais Line beaches are 5–15 minutes away. In 2026 the festival runs from 10 to 12 July, with a lineup of alternative rock, indie and international pop that rivals the best European festivals.
The strategy we've found works best: stay in Cascais or Oeiras, enjoy the beaches in the morning (Carcavelos, São João, Oeiras) and take the train back to Algés in the late afternoon for the festival. It's a perfect combination of festival and beach with no logistical stress.

Praia do Meco, adjacent to the venue, is known for its naturist character (north section) and the raw beauty of its dunes and cliffs. Combining the festival with a day at this beach is an extraordinary experience.

The most intimate festival at the end of the world
The Sudowoodo (heir to the legendary Sudowoodo / Boom Festival in the Alentejo Litoral) runs from 13 to 16 August near Praia da Zambujeira do Mar, one of Portugal's most dramatic and isolated beaches: high cliffs, cold crystalline water, accessed via a 300-metre dirt track.
The combination of alternative electronic music festival and wild Alentejo Litoral creates an otherworldly atmosphere. Very limited capacity (~5,000 people) — tickets sell out months in advance.

Vodafone Paredes de Coura — Taboão River Beach
The indie and alternative festival with a river beach included
Vodafone Paredes de Coura is unique in the national landscape: the venue includes the Taboão River Beach, a natural lake on the banks of the River Coura where festival-goers swim between concerts. In 2026 it runs from 19 to 22 August, with an indie rock, folk alternative and electronic lineup that is consistently one of the most interesting in Portugal.
Located in the Minho, in the far northwest of the country, in an area of lush landscape. Those who combine the festival with a visit to the beaches of northern Portugal (Moledo, Afife, Âncora) create a memorable summer itinerary.

Practical Tips for Festivals + Beach
Accommodation logistics
- Book in advance: July and August in Lisbon, the Algarve and Caparica sell out 3–4 months before the festivals. For Afro Nation in Portimão, demand starts in March.
- Camping can save €€€: most festivals offer camping on-site or adjacent. Paredes de Coura and Sudowoodo have a very strong camping culture.
- Airbnb vs hotel: groups of 4+ generally find better value in apartments. For urban festivals (NOS Alive), metro/train eliminates the need to stay close to the venue.
What to bring for beach + festival combo
- SPF 50+ sunscreen (essential at outdoor stages during the day)
- Sand-proof footwear robust enough for the festival ground (sturdy sandals like Teva or trainers)
- Small waterproof backpack for documents, phone and a compact beach towel
- Reusable water bottle — all festivals have free refill stations
- Ear protection for extended concerts
Safety and health
- At beach festivals, alcohol + sun + water can be a dangerous combination. Hydrate well before entering the sea.
- On Atlantic beaches (Caparica, Zambujeira, Meco) there are rip currents. Do not enter the sea at night or after consuming alcohol.
- All festivals on this list have a medical post on site.
FAQ
Can I go to the beach during the festival?
At most festivals on this list, yes — especially Afro Nation (Praia da Rocha is the actual venue), MOGA and Sol da Caparica (the beach is metres from the stages). At NOS Alive, the Cascais Line beaches are 10–20 minutes by train.
Which festivals are cheapest?
Sol da Caparica (~€45/day) and Super Bock Super Rock (~€65/day) are the most affordable options. Sudowoodo (full pass ~€155–195) and MOGA (~€90/day) are the most expensive.
Do I need a car for the festivals?
NOS Alive and Sol da Caparica/MOGA are accessible by public transport from Lisbon. Afro Nation requires a car or long-distance bus. Sudowoodo is the only one where a car is practically essential.
When should I buy tickets?
For Afro Nation and MOGA, buy as soon as sales open (usually October/November of the previous year). For NOS Alive and Sol da Caparica you can wait until February/March with little risk. Sudowoodo always sells out quickly.
Are there free festivals near beaches?
Yes — many town councils organise free summer concerts in front of beaches. In Portimão, Albufeira, Lagos, Sesimbra, Cascais and Setúbal there is free or token-entry summer cultural programming. Check the website of the municipality you plan to visit.
