Peneda-Gerês National Park is Portugal's only mainland national park and one of the Iberian Peninsula's most compelling ecotourism destinations. Its granite mountains, oak forests and pure-water rivers create the ideal backdrop for hiking — and many of the best trails end or pass through river beaches where a swim becomes the finest possible reward.
Trilho do Rio Homem — ending at Ermida Beach
The Rio Homem Trail follows the river upstream from Campo do Gerês through oak woodland, ending at the Praia Fluvial de Ermida. This moderate-difficulty route covers around 12 km return with gentle elevation gain, making it accessible to hikers with some experience. The arrival at Ermida — translucent water framed by granite and vegetation — is the perfect payoff.
Difficulty: Moderate | Distance: ~12 km return | Time: 3–4 hours
Tip: Bring water shoes — the rocky riverbed at Ermida is worth wading into
Cascatas Route — near Gerês and Caniçada reservoir
Near Gerês village, the Cascatas circular trail passes waterfalls and overlooks the Caniçada reservoir. In drought years, the receding waters reveal the ruins of the submerged village of Vilarinho das Furnas, flooded in 1971 — a haunting sight. The Gerês/Campo do Gerês river beach is nearby for a post-walk swim.
Lindoso Trail — Alto Lindoso lake
In the park's northern sector, the Lindoso Trail starts at the medieval village of Lindoso — famous for its granite espigueiros (granaries) and hilltop castle — and descends to the shores of the Alto Lindoso reservoir, home to the Praia Fluvial do Lindoso. The park here shelters populations of Iberian wolves and garrano wild horses — dawn and dusk are the best times for wildlife spotting.
Difficulty: Moderate | Distance: ~8 km circular
Practical information
- Best months: June to September — June for lush scenery and quieter beaches, September for autumn colours and fewer crowds

- Lifeguards are present at the main river beaches during the official bathing season
- From Porto: take the A3 to Braga, then the EN103 towards Gerês (approximately 1h15)
