Madeira Beaches: The Best Beaches on the Island and Porto Santo

Madeira is not an island of white-sand beaches — and that is precisely what makes it unique. From volcanic shingle beaches to rock pools carved by the sea, and the golden sands of Porto Santo, there is much to discover.

Madeira always surprises visitors who arrive expecting conventional beaches. The island's volcanic origin has shaped a dramatic coastline of steep cliffs, black rocks and natural pools of singular beauty. But this does not mean an absence of beaches — it means beaches completely different from those found in the Algarve or the Mediterranean, and all the more memorable for it.

Natural pools and volcanic coastline

The true bathing treasure of Madeira is its natural and volcanic rock pools. The Natural Pools of Porto Moniz in the northwest of the island are among the most photographed in Portugal: formed by basaltic lava, the pools fill with seawater at high tide and create a bathing experience with views over the Atlantic that few places in the world can match. Equally impressive is the Seixal Lido, with crystal-clear pools beneath the island's tallest waterfalls falling directly into the sea.

Porto Santo — the golden sand beach

If what you are looking for is a golden sandy beach, Porto Santo is the answer. This sister island of Madeira has 9 kilometres of continuous golden sand with properties considered therapeutic for rheumatic and respiratory conditions. The water is warmer than on the mainland, the sea calm, and the island has a tranquillity that contrasts with the bustle of Funchal. The ferry links Funchal to Porto Santo in 2h30, or there are regular flights.

Practical tips

  • Porto Moniz natural pools charge a small entry fee; arrive early in August to avoid queues
  • The sea in Madeira can be rough with strong currents — always follow lifeguard instructions
  • Public bus transport covers most beaches; renting a car gives more flexibility for remote spots
