When people think of beaches in Portugal, most automatically picture the Algarve, the Silver Coast or the Atlantic beaches of the North. But there's a lesser-known and equally stunning side of Portugal: its river beaches. Rivers like the Mondego, Zêzere, Douro, Guadiana and dozens of their tributaries offer freshwater beaches that, in July and August, become true oases of cool relief.
Why choose a river beach?
River beaches have unique characteristics that set them apart from sea beaches. The water is generally warmer than the Atlantic in summer — especially in inland regions where temperatures can soar above 35°C. There are no waves or strong currents, making them particularly safe for children and weak swimmers. And the environment is completely different: surrounded by oak, poplar and willow trees, with the sound of water rather than the roar of the ocean.
What to know before you go
Unlike sea beaches, not all river beaches have permanent lifeguard supervision. Always check whether the beach has a lifeguard before swimming, especially with children. Water quality is monitored by the Portuguese Environment Agency — you can check updated data in our guide for each beach.
