The Rio Lima rises in Galicia and enters Portugal through the northern border, flowing through a landscape of green hills, wine estates and granite villages at the heart of the Minho. Along its course, before reaching the Atlantic at Viana do Castelo, the Lima creates some of the country's finest river beaches. This route follows the Lima valley upstream — from Ponte de Lima to the Alto Lindoso reservoir at the gates of Gerês — combining history, gastronomy, scenery and river swimming.
Stop 1: Ponte de Lima — Portugal's oldest town
The route begins at Ponte de Lima, considered the oldest town in Portugal. Its multi-arched Roman-medieval bridge, riverside gardens, manor houses and the famous fortnightly market (the country's oldest) create a scene of rare charm. The Praia Fluvial de Ponte de Lima sits right beside the historic bridge — calm, shallow water ideal for families, with the bridge as a backdrop. The beach has full facilities including lifeguard cover in season.
Stop 2: Arcos de Valdevez — where the Vez meets the Lima
Following the EN202 upstream brings you to Arcos de Valdevez, a charming town where the Rio Vez tributary joins the Lima. The river beach here is cooler and wilder than Ponte de Lima — the water comes straight from the national park mountains. The town has a well-preserved medieval centre. Try the local vaca barrosã beef and the area's Vinho Verde wines.
Stop 3: Lindoso — the lake in the heart of the park
The final stop reaches Lindoso and its medieval castle surrounded by granite espigueiros (corn-drying granaries unique to Minho culture). The Praia Fluvial do Lindoso on the Alto Lindoso reservoir offers crystal-clear water and stunning views of the national park mountains reflected in the lake.
