The Silver Coast stretches over 200 kilometres of Atlantic coastline, passing through some of Portugal's most iconic beaches and surf towns. While the Algarve concentrates the crowds, the Silver Coast retains a more authentic character: fishing villages, fresh seafood, and Atlantic beaches with a power and grandeur the Mediterranean can never match.
Key highlights
Nazaré is world-famous for the giant waves of the Nazaré Canyon — waves exceeding 30 metres that attract big-wave surfers from October to March. Outside big-wave season, it is a vibrant urban beach with iconic traditional culture. Peniche hosts an annual WSL World Surf League Championship stop at Supertubos, one of Europe's best tube waves. Ericeira is Europe's only World Surf Reserve, protecting 4 km of world-class surf breaks. In the south, Arrábida Natural Park hides beaches with near-Mediterranean water clarity — Praia da Galapinhos has been repeatedly voted Portugal's most beautiful beach.
When to visit
June to September for sun and swimming; autumn for surf and smaller crowds. Atlantic water temperatures reach 17–20°C in summer — a thin wetsuit is useful in May or October. Car access to Arrábida beaches is restricted in summer and must be pre-booked online.
