Cacela Velha Beach

Cacela Velha Beach, in the municipality of Vila Real de Santo António, Algarve, Portugal, is one of the most remote and unspoilt beaches on the eastern Algarve. Accessible only by boat or wading across an arm of the Ria Formosa, this barrier beach of white fine sand separates the Atlantic Ocean from the calm lagoon waters, with the medieval village of Cacela Velha — its whitewashed chapel and ancient fort perched on a hilltop — as a backdrop. With no permanent commercial facilities, it is the ideal destination for those seeking pristine nature and silence.

Beach characteristics

Cacela Velha is a barrier beach within the Ria Formosa Natural Park, a RAMSAR-listed wetland of international importance. The ocean-facing side offers open Atlantic with moderate swell. The lagoon side features calm, warm, transparent water — perfect for children and snorkelling. The sand is white and fine, with well-conserved dunes sheltering protected dune vegetation. Water quality is rated Excellent. GPS (north bank of the ria): 37.1681° N, 7.5413° W.

Getting there

Access is from the village of Cacela Velha, about 12 km west of Vila Real de Santo António and 4 km east of Manta Rota. Walk down the hill from the village to the lagoon bank, where local boatmen operate informal crossings in small boats (available in summer, donation/price by negotiation). In some seasons it is possible to wade across at a shallow point. No parking at the bank — park in the village.

Best time to visit

Spring (April–June): few visitors, lush nature, migratory birds in the ria and improving beach conditions. July–August bring more visitors and more regular boat crossings. In winter, the beach is completely deserted but the village and lagoon landscape have a special quiet charm.
