Tavira Island Beach
Tavira, Faro
About this beach
Praia da Ilha de Tavira is one of the most extensive and well-preserved beaches in the Algarve, on the Ilha de Tavira — one of the barrier islands of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, in the municipality of Tavira (Faro district). With kilometres of sandy beach, preserved dunes, calm waters and virtually untouched nature, it is an incomparable destination for those seeking a wild beach without sacrificing essential facilities. Coordinates: 37°06'00"N, 7°38'00"W.
Location
Ilha de Tavira is an elongated barrier island separating the Atlantic Ocean from the Ria Formosa lagoon, in eastern Algarve. Access is from the town of Tavira (15-minute boat crossing) or from Pedras d'El Rei/Barril via footpath or tourist train. The beach occupies the outer (Atlantic-facing) side of the island.
Getting there
From Tavira: regular boats depart from Cais das Quatro Águas, 2 km from the centre (taxi or bus). Crossing takes 10-15 minutes. Boats run year-round, with increased frequency in the bathing season (June–September). From Pedras d'El Rei (Barril): cross the lagoon via a small tourist train or on foot along the boardwalk.
What to expect
The beach splits into several sections of varying development: near the pier there are restaurants, beach bars and equipment concessions. Further east the beach becomes progressively wilder and more secluded. Ria-facing waters are warm and calm (ideal for children); the Atlantic face can have stronger swell. In season: lifeguards, toilets, restaurants. Blue Flag.
Activities and experiences
Birdwatching in the Ria Formosa is world-class — flamingos, herons, stilts and other species inhabit the natural park. Snorkelling, kayaking through the lagoon system and long walks along the deserted coast are other highlights. The area near the pier has its own social scene with fish and seafood restaurants.
Best time to visit
June–September for swimming. Water temperature: 20°C in June, 24°C in August. The Ria Formosa Natural Park is interesting year-round for birdwatching, especially autumn and winter when migratory birds pass through.
Nearby beaches
Praia do Barril, on the same island to the west, is famous for its anchor cemetery. Manta Rota beach is on the other side of the lagoon. The town of Tavira, with its castle and historic churches, is a great cultural complement.
