Marinha Beach
Lagoa, Faro
About this beach
Praia da Marinha, located in the parish of Caramujeira, in the municipality of Lagoa, is widely recognized as one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe and the world. Its golden limestone cliffs, natural rock arches, and emerald-coloured waters create a landscape of rare beauty on the Algarve coast. Coordinates: 37°05'24"N, 8°24'45"W.
Location
Situated between Armação de Pêra and Carvoeiro, Praia da Marinha is part of the Lagoa municipality, in the Algarve region (Faro district). It sits along a protected coastal stretch, with limestone cliffs reaching tens of metres in height and rocky sculptures shaped by the Atlantic over millennia.
Getting there
By car, take the EN125 national road to Lagoa, then follow signs for Caramujeira/Praia da Marinha. There is a paid car park at the top of the stairs. By public transport, EVA bus lines between Portimão and Albufeira pass through Lagoa, with local connections by taxi or bicycle. The beach is reached via a steep wooden staircase of approximately 150 steps down the cliffs.
What to expect
The beach has a small but fine golden sand area, surrounded by imposing rock formations. During the bathing season (June to September) a beach bar operates with drinks, ice cream and snacks, sunbed and umbrella rental. There is a lifeguard post and portable toilet facilities. The beach is not wheelchair accessible due to the staircase. It holds the Blue Flag award from FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education).
Activities and experiences
Sea caves and rock arches accessible by swimming at low tide are the main attraction — the Natural Arches (Arcos Naturais) are among the most photographed in Portugal. Snorkelling in the crystal-clear waters reveals rich marine life. Kayak and boat tours depart from Carvoeiro and Benagil to explore the sea caves along this stretch. The atmosphere is calm and contemplative; the beach's small size creates an exclusive feel compared to larger Algarve beaches, though in July and August visitor numbers are high.
Best time to visit
The ideal bathing season runs from June to September. Water temperatures range from 18°C in June to 22°C in August. In May and October, with fewer tourists and still pleasant sunshine, the experience is especially rewarding. Winter months offer dramatic cliff scenery with very few visitors.
Nearby beaches
Praia de Benagil, famous for its sea cave, is approximately 1.5 km to the east. Praia do Carvoeiro lies about 3 km to the west, with more facilities and restaurants. Praia de Vale Centeanes is less than 2 km away, in an equally picturesque cove.
