Carvalho Beach

Lagoa, Faro

About this beach

Carvalho Beach, in the municipality of Lagoa, Algarve, Portugal, is one of the most secret and extraordinary beaches on the Portuguese coast. Nestled between towering orange-and-white limestone cliffs, this small golden-sand cove — just 80 metres long — conceals its greatest wonder: a natural tunnel carved through the rock, which serves as the only pedestrian access to the beach, creating a uniquely theatrical entrance found nowhere else in Portugal. Discovered only by those who seek it out, Carvalho Beach is the ultimate Algarve hidden gem.

Beach characteristics

The beach is sheltered on almost all sides by tall cliffs, providing natural protection from the wind and creating a warmer microclimate than neighbouring beaches. The sand is fine and golden, water quality is rated Excellent, and the south-facing orientation ensures sunlight throughout the day. Water temperature: 16–17 °C in spring, 21–22 °C in August. The rocky formations at both ends of the beach are rich in marine life — sea urchins, octopus, and various fish — making it excellent for snorkelling. GPS: 37.0822° N, 8.4199° W.

Getting there — the tunnel

Access is from the village of Carvoeiro (Lagoa municipality), about 2 km away. Free parking at the clifftop car park, from which an 800-metre coastal trail leads to the top of the rock tunnel. The tunnel is approximately 50 metres long and 2 metres wide, with steps cut into the rock — requiring crouching in places and care when wet. Not accessible for people with reduced mobility.

Facilities

Best time to visit

May and June are ideal: fewer visitors, warming water, great light for photography. In July and August the beach can reach its maximum capacity of 50–80 people — arrive early. September and October offer good conditions and far fewer visitors. In winter the beach is deserted but the clifftop trail and geology are spectacular.
