About this beach
Praia do Vigário sits in the centre of Câmara de Lobos, just south of Largo da República, on Madeira's south coast. It's a maritime pebble beach roughly 400 metres long, set in the historic bay that gave the municipality its name and that still shelters the local fishing fleet, including the boats used for the traditional black scabbardfish catch.
Until the early 1970s this was the municipality's main bathing spot and also where families washed clothes and fishermen prepared their gear — a link to everyday Câmara de Lobos life that still shows in the beach's atmosphere. The water is monitored regularly by the regional health authorities: in May 2026 it was placed under a two-day bathing ban after microbiological contamination was detected, later lifted once new lab tests came back clean, and the water currently carries a "sufficient" quality classification for the season — worth checking, especially after rain.
During the bathing season the beach has permanent lifeguard cover, a wooden walkway that eases access over the pebbles, sanitary facilities, outdoor showers, fixed sun umbrellas and a solarium area. There's a car park with around 200 spaces and a beach-support restaurant/bar right by the shore. In June 2026, the Sociedade Metropolitana de Desenvolvimento and Câmara de Lobos town council signed a ten-year management protocol to strengthen safety, cleaning and upkeep of the site.
