The Algarve, Portugal's southernmost region, is famous throughout Europe for its golden sandy beaches, wind-sculpted limestone cliffs and crystal-clear waters. With over 150 kilometres of coastline, the choice can be overwhelming. So we've compiled the 10 Algarve beaches that deserve a place on your list in 2025.
1. Praia da Marinha
Named one of the most beautiful beaches in the world by Forbes magazine and National Geographic, Praia da Marinha in Lagoa is a natural spectacle. Protected by golden limestone cliffs, its caves, rock arches and natural pools make it unique. Access is via a steep staircase, but the view you find at the bottom is worth the effort.
2. Praia de Benagil
Famous for its sea cave, Praia de Benagil is one of the most photographed spots in Portugal. The cave, accessible by swimming or kayak, has an opening in the ceiling through which light enters in a beam, creating an almost magical atmosphere.
3. Meia Praia
Nearly 4 kilometres long, Meia Praia in Lagos is ideal for those who want space. Less crowded than more famous beaches, it has full facilities and is easy to reach from Lagos.
4. Praia da Falésia
Between Vilamoura and Albufeira, Praia da Falésia stretches for about 6 kilometres of reddish cliffs. It's a Blue Flag beach with clean waters and a quieter feel than Albufeira's beaches.
5. Praia de Odeceixe
On the border between the Algarve and Alentejo, Odeceixe surprises with its location where the Seixe stream meets the Atlantic Ocean. Protected by a Natural Park, it remains in an almost pristine state.
How to choose the right beach in the Algarve
The choice depends on what you're looking for. For families with young children, beaches like Meia Praia are ideal. For adventurers, Benagil and Marinha are unmissable. To escape the August crowds, opt for the eastern Algarve or the Vicentine coast.
