About this beach

Praia do Camilo, on the southern coast of Lagos in the municipality of Lagos (Faro district), is one of the most photogenic and romantically appealing beaches in the Algarve. Nestled between dramatic limestone cliffs, with turquoise waters and naturally sculpted rock formations, it is a true hidden gem about 1.5 km from Lagos town centre. Coordinates: 37°06'24"N, 8°40'30"W.

Location

Located on the peninsula between Ponta da Piedade and Praia de Dona Ana, at the southern tip of Lagos municipality, Algarve region. Its sheltered position between cliffs keeps the waters notably calmer than the exposed beaches of the western Algarve coast.

Getting there

By car, follow the Estrada da Ponta da Piedade from Lagos town centre. Small car park at the top of the cliffs. Beach access via a wooden staircase of approximately 200 steps — every step worth it for the beauty below. Walking from Lagos centre takes about 20-25 minutes. No direct public transport to the spot.

What to expect

Compact beach with fine golden sand, sheltered by natural rock formations that keep waters calm, clear and safe for swimming. In the bathing season (June–September): lifeguard, sunbed and parasol hire. Rock caves and tunnels accessible at low tide (swimming or walking). No beach bar — bring your own food and drinks.

Activities and experiences

Snorkelling and swimming in crystal-clear waters are the highlights. At low tide, a natural tunnel connects Praia do Camilo to a small adjacent beach. Rock arches and caves are accessible by swimming. The sunset viewed from the clifftop access point is spectacular, with Ponta da Piedade formations rising from the sea. Boat tours to Ponta da Piedade depart from Lagos Marina.

Best time to visit

June–September for swimming. Water temperature: 18°C in June, 22°C in August. Off-season visits (March, April, October, November) reveal the cliff beauty without summer crowds.

Nearby beaches

Praia de Dona Ana is about 500 m north with more facilities. Praia do Porto de Mós is about 2 km west. Praia de Meia Praia (large family beach) is 4 km east of Lagos.
