About this beach

Meia Praia Beach, in Lagos, Algarve, Portugal, is one of the longest beaches on the western Algarve coast, stretching approximately 4 km of fine golden sand east of Lagos marina. Awarded the Blue Flag for water quality and services, it combines open Atlantic sea, full amenities and a relaxed atmosphere — ideal for families, water sports enthusiasts, and those seeking long sunset walks by the ocean.

Beach characteristics

Facing south-southwest, Meia Praia enjoys sunshine throughout the day. The sand is fine and golden, typical of the western Algarve, and the beach is wide even at high tide. Atlantic water quality is rated Excellent by the Portuguese Environment Agency. Water temperature ranges from 16 °C in winter to 22–23 °C in summer. The beach is more exposed than Lagos cliff coves, with moderate swell that attracts surfers and bodyboarders, while most of the beach remains calm enough for family swimming.

Getting there

By road from Lagos, take the EN125 towards Portimão and follow signs for Meia Praia. Several car parks line the beach (paid July–August). By train, Meia Praia station is steps from the sand — it is the only Algarve beach served directly by train (Lagos–Tunes line). GPS coordinates: 37.1094° N, 8.6438° W.

Facilities

  • Lifeguard on duty June to September
  • Blue Flag awarded regularly since 2010
  • Multiple beach bars and restaurants along the 4 km stretch
  • WC, showers and changing facilities
  • Disabled access at several points
  • Ample parking (free outside peak season)
  • Water sports equipment rental: SUP, kayak, windsurfing

Activities and experiences

The length of the beach invites long sunset walks with views over Lagos marina and the Serra de Monchique hills. The northeast wind common in summer makes Meia Praia popular for windsurfing and kitesurfing. A local surf school offers lessons for all levels. In low season the beach is frequented by local surfers and sport fishermen.

Best time to visit

June to September for ideal beach conditions. May and October are excellent for quieter visits with good weather. In July and August the beach hosts many visitors, but its 4 km length always ensures enough space. The train connection makes it particularly accessible without a car during summer.
