Dona Ana Beach
Lagos, Faro
About this beach
Dona Ana Beach in Lagos, Algarve, Portugal, is consistently ranked among the most beautiful beaches in Europe and regularly featured in international travel guides. Located approximately 1 km south of Lagos historic town centre, this sheltered golden-sand cove is embraced by towering Jurassic limestone cliffs over 180 million years old, sculpted by the Atlantic into extraordinary shapes — natural arches, sea caves, and rocky pillars rising from the water.
Beach characteristics
Stretching approximately 200 metres in length and 50 metres wide at low tide, Dona Ana is a small but complete beach. Water quality is excellent — certified by the Blue Flag 2025, an award Lagos has maintained continuously for decades. Water temperatures range from around 17 °C in March to 22–24 °C in the summer months (July–September), making it comfortable for swimming from June through October.
The sand is fine and golden, of limestone origin, and the waters are typically calm and well sheltered with minimal swell inside the bay — conditions that make it especially safe for families with young children. The rocky outcrops at both ends of the beach harbour rich marine life, making it an excellent spot for snorkelling.
Getting there and parking
Access is via a wooden boardwalk of around 60 steps descending from the clifftop. Paid parking is available nearby (typical rates: €1.50–2.50/hour in peak season). Alternatively, it is a 15–20-minute walk from Lagos town centre, or a short cycle along the seafront promenade. GPS coordinates: 37.0881° N, 8.6713° W.

The Forte Ponta da Bandeira and Lagos historic old town with Baroque churches are less than 1.5 km away. Boat trips departing from Lagos marina explore the famous sea caves and rock arches of the Algarve coastline — one of the most popular excursions in the region.
