About this beach

The Praia de Dona Ana, in Lagos, Algarve, is recognised as one of Portugal's most beautiful beaches and regularly features on international lists of Europe's best beaches. Located about 1 km south of Lagos historic centre, this small cove of golden sand is embraced by imposing Jurassic limestone cliffs over 180 million years old, sculpted by the Atlantic into unique organic forms — natural arches, caves and stone pillars rising from the sea.

Beach features

Around 200 metres long and 50 metres wide at low tide, Praia de Dona Ana is a small but complete beach. The water quality is excellent — certified by the Blue Flag 2025, a distinction Lagos has held continuously for decades. Water temperature ranges from 17 °C in March to 22–24 °C in summer (July–September), making it pleasant for swimming from June to October.

The sand is fine and golden, of limestone origin, and the waters are usually calm and sheltered, with little swell inside the bay — which makes it especially safe for families with children. On the rocky headlands at either end of the beach there are underwater formations rich in marine life, making it an excellent spot for snorkelling.

How to get there and park

Access is via a wooden walkway with about 60 steps descending from the cliff to the beach. There is paid parking nearby (typical rates: €1.50–2.50/hour in high season). Alternatively, you can walk from Lagos centre in about 15–20 minutes, or cycle along the seafront promenade. GPS coordinates: 37.0881° N, 8.6713° W.

Best times to visit

In July and August the beach gets very crowded; morning arrival before 9 a.m. is recommended to secure a spot. May, June and September offer the best balance of good weather, warm water and fewer crowds. In October many visitors still swim, but the beach is practically empty.

Nearby attractions

The Praia do Camilo is only a 5-minute walk away and equally spectacular, reached by a wooden stairway between the cliffs. The Forte Ponta da Bandeira and Lagos historic centre with its Baroque churches are less than 1.5 km away. Boat trips also leave from Lagos to explore the caves and arches of the Algarve cliffs, one of the region's most popular attractions.
