About this beach

Praia da Rocha is one of the most iconic and popular beaches in the Algarve, stretching approximately 1.5 kilometres of wide, well-equipped sandy beach in Portimão (Faro district). Its imposing golden rock formations rising from the sand, the lively seafront promenade and excellent leisure facilities make it one of the unmissable landmarks of Algarve tourism. Location

Praia da Rocha is on the southern bank of Portimão, in west-central Algarve (Faro district), near the mouth of the Arade River, about 3 km from Portimão town centre. The surrounding neighbourhood — also called Praia da Rocha — is an established tourist resort with comprehensive accommodation, dining and nightlife.

Getting there

By car, the beach is well signposted from the EN125. Several paid car parks nearby. EVA Transportes buses run frequently between Portimão centre and Praia da Rocha. From Faro airport, about 45 minutes by car. A municipal shuttle bus operates during the bathing season.

What to expect

Wide sandy beach with golden sand, flanked by a wooden seafront promenade running the full length. In the bathing season (June–September): multiple sun lounger/parasol concessions, toilet facilities, showers, several lifeguard posts and a Nautical Centre. Partial wheelchair accessibility. The 17th-century Forte de Santa Catarina sits at the western end.

Activities and experiences

Water sports include surfing, bodyboarding, stand-up paddleboarding, boat trips and jet skiing. The promenade invites long walks among bars and restaurants. The nightlife is among the liveliest in the Algarve. Portimão Arena (largest indoor entertainment centre in the region) is 3 km away.
