Praia das Avencas
Cascais, Lisbon
About this beach
Praia das Avencas, between Parede and São Pedro do Estoril, takes its name from the avenca fern (Adiantum capillus-veneris), a plant with a long tradition of medicinal use that grows in the humid cracks of the limestone cliffs. Its waters were designated a Biophysical Interest Zone in 1998, giving rise to the Área Marinha Protegida das Avencas — Portugal's first locally-managed marine protected area. It is a beach of tide pools and stepped rock platforms, where collecting flora/fauna, boat anchoring and motorized water sports are prohibited. It holds the Blue Flag.
