About this beach

Praia do Barril is one of the most special and remote beaches in the Algarve, located on Ilha de Tavira (Tavira Island), a barrier island within the Ria Formosa Natural Park. Reaching it requires crossing the lagoon either by foot along a boardwalk or by the famous miniature tourist train — a short journey that makes the visit feel like an adventure and rewards with over 2 km of wide golden sand, calm turquoise water and a blissful sense of seclusion.

Location

The beach is on Ilha de Tavira, a barrier island within the Ria Formosa Natural Park, municipality of Tavira, Faro district. Access departs from Santa Luzia or Pedras d'El Rei on the mainland shore.

Getting There

By car, drive to Santa Luzia (3 km from Tavira) or Pedras d'El Rei. Paid parking is available at the lagoon edge. From there, choose between the tourist train (paid, beloved by children), the free pedestrian boardwalk (~800 m), or water taxis in peak season. The boardwalk walk is scenic with views over the ria and its birdlife.

What to Expect

Beach facilities include a restaurant, bar, toilets, showers and equipment rental. The beach is famous for its "Anchor Cemetery" — hundreds of old fishing anchors left by fishermen over decades, now a unique cultural landmark. Blue Flag status and lifeguards in season.

Activities

Water activities include kayaking, canoeing and snorkelling in the clear waters. Birdwatching in the Ria Formosa is exceptional — flamingos, herons and waders are common sights. Walking along the island's coastline reveals dunes, coastal flora and total tranquillity.

Best Time to Visit

July and August are busiest. May, June and September offer quieter conditions with warm water. Winter is peaceful, visited only by walkers and birdwatchers.

Nearby Beaches

Praia da Ilha de Tavira shares the same island and is reachable on foot. Praia de Manta Rota is about 15 km east. Praia de Cabanas is another Ria Formosa option nearby.
