Luz Beach
Lagos, Faro
About this beach
Luz Beach, in the fishing village of Luz, Lagos, Algarve, Portugal, is one of the most welcoming urban beaches on the western Algarve. Its 600-metre stretch of dark-golden sand is sheltered to the west by a striking black volcanic rock formation, combining an authentic village atmosphere with full amenities and Blue Flag-certified water quality. An ideal choice for families seeking intimacy over crowds.
Beach characteristics
The defining feature of Luz Beach is the black volcanic rock to the west, a calcified formation that shelters the beach and creates a dramatic visual contrast. The sand is fine and slightly dark-golden in tone, and the water is generally calm in the central section — excellent for families. Water quality is rated Excellent by the Portuguese Environment Agency. Water temperature: 16 °C in March, up to 22 °C in August. GPS: 37.0886° N, 8.7204° W.
Getting there
From Lagos, take the EN125 west towards Vila do Bispo and turn right for Luz (about 6 km from Lagos centre). Paid parking near the beach; free parking in the village streets. Eva Transportes bus runs from Lagos to Luz several times daily.
