Praia de Matosinhos is the most popular and frequented urban beach of Porto and the Porto Metropolitan Area — a true icon of the coastal identity of Northern Portugal. With its vast, long stretch of fine sand, Praia de Matosinhos is the favourite beach destination of Porto residents and thousands of tourists visiting Porto, especially in summer. Surf conditions are excellent — regular, quality Atlantic waves make Matosinhos one of the main surf and bodyboard spots in Northern Portugal. The extensive seafront promenade — lively and well-infrastructured — connects Matosinhos to Leça da Palmeira, with bike lanes, terraces, bars, and sea-view restaurants. Just a few minutes' walk from the beach lies Matosinhos' gastronomic heart: the famous Rua do Bonfim area, packed with fresh fish and seafood restaurants serving the best grilled sardines and daily catch. The beach holds a Blue Flag and is directly accessible by Metro (Blue Line, Matosinhos Sul station).
