About this beach

Praia dos Três Irmãos (Three Brothers Beach) is one of the Algarve's most iconic beaches, located in Alvor, near Portimão. Named after three dramatic sandstone rock formations rising from the ocean, the beach combines golden fine sand, turquoise waters, and a network of sea caves, arches, and grottoes carved into the cliffs. Natural rock pools form at low tide, creating calm warm paddling areas ideal for families and snorkelers alike.

Location

The beach lies in Alvor, Mexilhoeira Grande parish, Portimão municipality, within the protected area of the Ria de Alvor Natural Park. GPS: approximately 37°6'N, 8°32'W. The beach stretches around 500 metres between rocky outcrops.

Getting There

By car from Portimão, take the N125 towards Lagos, turn off for Alvor and follow beach signs. Paid car parks are available near the beach and at Alvor beach. On foot, a clifftop path connects Três Irmãos with Alvor beach. Proximo buses run between Portimão and Alvor in summer.

What to Expect

The beach has a beach bar/restaurant, sun lounger and parasol hire, toilets and showers. It regularly earns a Blue Flag. The standout feature is the natural rock pools at low tide — warm, calm, and teeming with sea anemones, crabs, and small fish.

Activities

Snorkelling is superb here thanks to crystal-clear water and rich underwater rocks. Boat trips from Alvor beach and Portimão Marina explore the caves and arches at sunset. Rock fishing is popular with locals. Cliff walks reveal hidden coves accessible only on foot or by boat.

July and August bring warmest water (24–26°C) and full services. May, June, and September offer quieter conditions. Winter attracts surfers and walkers on the clifftop trails.
