Alentejo Coast
The Alentejo Litoral is a coastal strip of exceptional beauty and tranquillity, stretching from Tróia in the north to Odeceixe in the south along more than 150 kilometres of Atlantic shoreline. The region combines some of Europe's most extensive and least-visited sandy beaches with the authenticity of an Alentejo landscape that reaches the sea: centuries-old cork oak forests, golden plains, coastal lagoons, and the grandeur of the Serra da Arrábida at its northern edge. Alentejo Coast beaches are defined by their extraordinary width, fine white sands, and near-total absence of development on the horizon — a rarity on the 21st-century European seaboard. Beaches such as Comporta, Melides, Santo André, São Torpes, and Aberta Nova offer kilometres of unbroken sand, with the Atlantic providing excellent conditions for surfing and windsurfing. The water is cool, invigorating, and clear. Life moves slowly and authentically, with outstanding local gastronomy based on black pig, seafood cataplanas, and razor-clam rice. Best visited June to September, drawing discerning travellers who prize unspoiled nature, peace, and authenticity over mass tourism.
