Trás-os-Montes

Trás-os-Montes

Trás-os-Montes is the northeastern region of Portugal, a land of ancient, wild landscapes whose very name means beyond the mountains. Though an inland region without Atlantic coastline, Trás-os-Montes offers a unique and little-known treasure: the river beaches of the Douro, Tâmega, Sabor, and Tua rivers, which carve through high plateaux and deep valleys, sculpting sandy and pebbly beaches of rare beauty. The Douro Internacional, which marks the Spanish border, is particularly spectacular: its sheer riverbanks and time-forgotten villages such as Miranda do Douro create a scene of epic grandeur. The Douro Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its viticultural terraced landscape, provides cool, calm river beaches with clear greenish water, ideal for families on blazing summer days — for summers here are hot and dry, with temperatures frequently exceeding 35 degrees Celsius. The region attracts nature lovers, adventurers, photographers, and wine tourists discovering the Douro. Best season for river beaches: June to September. Trasmontana gastronomy, based on smoked meats, cured ham, and Port wine, is an experience in itself.
